Unlocking hearts and minds with bold, original theatre
The Poetic Justice Project is dedicated to the creation of original theatre that examines crime, punishment and redemption. Through passionate collaboration of formerly incarcerated writers, artists, musicians and actors, we produce ground-breaking theatre that challenges and transforms our culture.
The Poetic Justice Project is a program of the William James Association, whose Prison Arts Project has provided arts programming in California prisons since 1977.
Deborah Tobola, founding Artistic Director of the Poetic Justice Project, worked for more than 12 years teaching writing and managing an arts program in California prisons.
Deborah produced six original plays at the California Men's Colony in San Luis Obispo before leaving to begin the Poetic Justice Project.
A widely published poet and children's book author, her work has earned four Pushcart Prize nominations and three Academy of American Poets awards. Read her poem on making art in prisonand listen to her poem "Dream/Time" here.
